Creation Day 1: Light & Dark Enrichment

We decided to learn about the days of creation this summer with fun cooking, arts, and field trips. Today we learned day 1 of creation when God created light and separated it from the darkness in Genesis 1:1-5.

Genesis 1:1-5

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that it was good. Then God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night”. And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

Days of Creation Coloring Book

I printed out the Days of Creation Coloring Book and stapled it together for the kids. Today we colored the front cover and the Day 1: Light & Dark page.

Chocolate Cupcake

Cupcake Ingredients:

• 1 cup white sugar
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/4 cup cocoa powder
• 1 teaspoons baking powder
• 1 teaspoons baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 eggs
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1/4 cup vegetable oil
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup boiling water

Cupcake Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Flour and grease 12 cupcake tins or use cupcake liners..
3. Combine the sugar, flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking power and and salt.
4. Add the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla into the same bowl.
5. Using a hand mixer, mix for three minutes on medium speed.
6. Stir in the boiling water last.
7. Pour into the prepared tins, filling each tin or liner about about 2/3 full.
8. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

Buttercream Ingredients:

• 1 cup butter
• 1 cup Crisco
• 4 cups powdered sugar (2 lbs)
• 2 teaspoons vanilla
• 1 tablespoon milk (if thick)

Buttercream Directions:

1. Cream together the butter and Crisco with a mixer.
2. Slowly add in 1 cup of powdered sugar at a time.
3. Add the vanilla, if it seems too thick you can add a bit of milk.

Light on Dark Chalk Art

Supplies:

• Black Paper
• Chalk Pieces
• Hammer

Directions:

1. Place the black paper on the ground outside.
2. Place small pieces of chalk on the paper.
3. Use the hammer to gently smash the chalk on the paper.
4. Pick up the paper and slide the chalk off.
5. See the light colors on the black paper.
