Thanksgiving Turkey (fruit & vegetable) Platters -25

Storm loves fresh fruits and vegetables, so we made turkey platters to snack on while Thanksgiving dinner was being made. We also made a meat, cheese, and cracker platter as well.

Fruit Platter

We placed half of a pear on the bottom of the platter for the turkey body, with sliced olive eyes and cut carrot feet and beak. Then we placed strawberries, orange slices, and grapes around the platter for the turkey feathers.

We also used waffle cones for the kids to make their own cornucopia’s with their fruit.

Vegetable Platter

I cut the top off of a red pepper and cleaned our the insides to make a bowl for the turkey body. We placed it near the bottom of the platter. I used the end that I cut off for the turkey’s head, with sliced olive eyes and cut pepper feet and beak. I also cut yellow peppers into strips coming out the of top of the turkeys head like feathers. Then we placed cucumber slices, baby carrots, celery sticks, and more pepper strips around the platter for the turkey feathers.

To make the ranch, I used 16 ounces of sour cream and a ranch dry mix packet.

Meat & Cheese Platter

We placed a cheese ball on the bottom of the platter for the turkey body, with sliced olive eyes and cut carrot feet and beak. Then we placed cheeses, crackers, meat slices, and honey candied almonds around the platter for the turkey feathers.

Gingerbread Castle

I found an Oreo cookie castle kit for our Thanksgiving Gingerbread House Tradition. We added all kind of Oreo’s and Christmas candies including Mini Oreo’s, Christmas lights sprinkles, spice drops, snowflake sprinkles, pull and peel Twizzlers, and mini candy canes.

We used the icing that came with the kit as the glue for the cookie pieces, but I made my buttercream icing for the decorations on the bottom. Then she used my piping bags to put icing wherever she wanted it.

Buttercream Ingredients:

Thanksgiving Gingerbread Nativity -24

Every year we make gingerbread houses on Thanksgiving. We made a Nativity scene with graham crackers and gum drop people. We used coconut for the hay and animal crackers with candy canes as well. We tried something new this year, using peanut butter instead of icing; but it wasn’t sturdy enough so the gumdrops kept falling over. Next time we will have to add some powdered sugar to the peanut butter to thicken it up.

We also got this Gingerbread Train to try.

Homemade Apple Cinnamon Play Dough

We made some homemade Apple Cinnamon Play Dough, it is included in my Teachers Pay Teachers Fall Fun Autumn Preschool Pack. I also laminated the Apple Tree Orchard Play Dough Mat that is included in the pack.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • In a small saucepan, mix together 1 cup of water, 1 TBSP vegetable oil and a few drops of red food coloring.
  • In another small bowl mix together 1 cup flour, 1/3 cup salt, 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar and 2 teaspoons Apple Pie Spice.
  • Turn the stove on medium heat and slowly mix your flour mixture into your water mixture.
  • Continuing mixing until the color is fully blended and the playdough begins to pull away from the saucepan. The batter will be lumpy but as you stir the playdough begins to form and sticks to itself.
  • Place the playdough on a piece of parchment paper and allow it to cool a bit.
  • Once itโ€™s cool to the touch knead for a few minutes until soft.

Christmas Cardboard Fireplace & Gingerbread Christmas Tree

We don’t have a fireplace in our house, so I wanted to see if I could make a cardboard fireplace for Christmas this year. We placed our Charlie Brown Christmas tree on the fireplace and were able to take pictures of the baby girls in front of it too.

Cardboard Fireplace

I wrapped 5 diaper boxes with brown packing paper and glued them together. Then I wrapped 3 giant pizza boxes and glued them to the top of the boxes for the ledge.

Next I put red and black paint on a paper plate and used a damp sponge to make painted “bricks” all over the boxes.

I got a flat piece of cardboard and painted the back of it black and then I painted red, orange, and yellow flames. Then I placed it in the opening of the fireplace and taped it in place.

I put some pine garland on the top of the fireplace with some Christmas decorations. I also placed our Charlie Brown Christmas Tree on the top of the fireplace too.

Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

I went out to the yard and found a pine branch that looked how I wanted. I nailed two by fours together and straightened out a wire coat hanger to attach trough the two by four stand. I attached the tree branch to this coat hanger wire to help it stand up. Then I placed a single red, round ornament bulb on the top of the branch and wrapped a thin blue swaddling cloth around the bottom of the tree as Linus’s blanket.

  4. Spoon the mix into the crusts. I decorated the pies with some extra cool whip and shaved chocolate bar for my sonโ€™s birthday.
  5. Freeze for 4 hours.

Cinnamon Rolls

I made homemade cinnamon rolls for Thanksgiving day breakfast…

Ingredients:

Dough

  • 1ย cupย warm milk
  • 1ย tablespoonย instant dry yeast
  • 2ย tablespoonsย white granulated sugar
  • 1ย teaspoonย salt
  • 3ย tablespoonsย softened butter
  • 1ย large egg
  • 3ย cupsย all-purpose flour

Filling

  • 1/2ย cupย melted butter
  • 1ย cupย brown sugar
  • 2ย tablespoonsย ground cinnamon

Icing

  • 4ย ouncesย cream softened cheese
  • 1/4ย cupย softened butter
  • 1 to 1 1/2ย cupsย powdered sugar
  • 1/2ย teaspoonย vanilla extract
  • 1 to 2ย tablespoonsย milk

Directions:

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm milk and yeast… let set for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Add sugar, salt, butter, and eggs. Add in flour. Using a dough hook, turn the mixer on to a low speed.
  3. Once the flour starts to mix into the dough, increase the speed to a medium range. Add more flour as necessary so that the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. It should be soft, but not stick to your hands.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased mixing bowl. Cover with a towel and let rise until double in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Lightly grease a baking pan. Punch down the dough and roll into a 12inch by 18inch rectangle.
  6. In a small bowl, combine the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Spread on top of the dough. Roll up tightly lengthwise so you have one long roll. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into 12 one-inch slices.
  7. Place the slices onto a lightly 9×13 pan. Cover and let rise 30 to 45 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Bake the rolls for about 20 minutes, until the tops have a touch of brown.
  9. While the cinnamon rolls are baking, make the cream cheese icing by using a hand mixer to whip together cream cheese and butter in a bowl until light and fluffy. Whip in powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Add enough milk to get a super soft consistency.
  10. Frost the rolls while still warm. Serve immediately or cool and store. Stays good for 4 to 5 days.

I made them the night before and placed them in the refrigerator before the last rising. In the morning I set them on the counter for an hour before I baked them.

Kids Thanksgiving Treats

One of our family Thanksgiving traditions is making Gingerbread Houses. This year we continued our tradition with mini Gingerbread Houses and Waffle Cone Christmas Trees. I also tried something new this year, I made a Thanksgiving Charcuterie Board with foods that my family enjoys.

  3. Then we decorated our houses with the candies using the icing as the “glue”.

Waffle Cone Christmas Trees

Ingredients:

  • Waffle Cones
  • Royal Icing
  • Green Food Coloring
  • Tiny Christmas Candies

Directions:

  1. We dyed some of the icing green and covered our waffle cones with it.
  2. Then we used the candies to decorate our Christmas trees.

Cousins Thanksgiving Fun

My Thanksgiving tradition is to make Gingerbread houses; so I decided to build them with my nieces and nephews this year. It was so much fun, now there are 11 cousins and J is the oldest!

We used Graham Crackers and Waffle Cones for our Gingerbread Houses and Christmas Trees this year.

I used a pear for the Turkey’s body and then cut up fruit to place around the pear for the Turkey’s feathers. These cousins just LOVE fruit.

I read “The Night Before Thanksgiving” to the cousins before bed… It is a great book with cousins and other extended family members. These cousins just love reading too.
